Posted on September 9, 2008 | 6 CommentsStockTock.com discusses the huge selloff today on large volume. This was the lowest close for the S&P since July 15. Weakness was broad based, but focused on financials and commodity stocks. LEH was down 45% and AIG finished lower by 19%. It appears hedge funds are being forced to liquidate positions. This is not a market to be calling a bottom in. Follow the momentum. The market can fall a lot further! We look at SPY, XLF, LEH, AIG, QQQQ, UUP, USO, GLD, KOL, SLX, OIH, EEM, FXI, TNX, VIX, and Elliot Wave S&P. -

Posted on September 8, 2008 | No CommentsStockTock.com discusses the market's dramatic price action and what it means for our short-term and medium-term outlook. We talk about how a trade's timeframe will dictate how we behave in the market. The SPY topped out at an interesting resistance point this morning. We identify all the important support and resistance levels for the the S&P. We also analyze the charts of QQQQ (NASDAQ 100), XLF (Financials), TNX (10-Year Treasury Yield), UUP (US Dollar Index), IWM (Small Caps), XHB (Homebuilders), and XRT (Retailers). -

Posted on September 5, 2008 | 4 CommentsStockTock.com discuss today's trading session and the after hours news on the GSEs. The market traded lower this morning on depressing employment data before reversing and closing positive. The recent outperformance of financials makes me wonder if someone knew something regarding FNM and FRE. This is probably a 'sell the news' situation where the smart money has already been made. We look at weekly charts of the S&P and NASDAQ. We also discuss the US dollar's performance and a potential reversal in the 10-year treasury bond. Several commodity-related stocks logged reversal candles on increased volume. Have a great weekend! -

Posted on September 4, 2008 | 2 CommentsStockTock.com discusses today's SIGNIFICANT move lower in the stock market and its implications. We use Elliot Wave Theory as a guideline for the market's next move and downside target. Persistent demand for treasuries show a lack of confidence in the equity market. Technology is broken and can fall much further. Financials held up relatively well, but I don't want to touch them. Commodities and emerging markets are leading the markets lower as rumors over hedge fund liquidations abound. Expect a small bounce or a pause day tomorrow. Sell into any rally. The next leg lower has begun! -

Posted on September 3, 2008 | 2 CommentsStockTock.com discusses today's choppy trading session and what it's watching for in the days ahead. Technology shares are getting slammed: QQQQ has broken down but the NASDAQ index held its 50 moving average. OIH and GLD are flirting with long-term trendlines. We also look at SPY, RIMM, GLW, SMH, XLF, GS, KRE, OIH, GLD, VIX, and TNX. -

Posted on September 2, 2008 | No CommentsStockTock.com discusses today's selling as traders returned from vacation and the volume picked up. This continues to be a day-trader's market for quick hits with tight stops. The US dollar made a new high and anything related to commodities got crushed. Money is still flowing out of emerging markets/Europe/commodities and moving into the US dollar/treasuries. Small caps held up well today but technology got slammed. The QQQQ is flirting with a technical breakdown. We look at SPY, QQQQ, XLF, RIMM, GOOG, AAPL, UUP, TNX, USO, UNG, GLD, OIH, SLX, KOL, and POT. -

Posted on August 28, 2008 | No CommentsStockTock.com discusses today's GDP rally and our outlook over the next couple weeks. We present the bull case and the bear case, and we pick the side supported by market psychology and Elliot Wave Theory. We still are not interested in trading financials as the XLF trades in its channel. Small caps continue to outperform. Oil and gas got crushed today. Full disclosure: StockTock is 0/3 on UNG bottom calls, but we bought some UNG today on what felt like panic selling. This is not a hurricane play, but a psychological bottom call. We look at charts of SPY, XLF, IWM, QQQQ, UNG, GS, and MER. There will be no video tomorrow but I will try to post one on Labor Day. Have a great holiday weekend! -

Posted on August 27, 2008 | No CommentsStockTock.com discusses today's light volume rally and what to expect over the next couple of days. The XLF and QQQQ were higher today, but its concerning that bellwethers GS and GOOG did not participate. In this trader's market, it is important to understand risk/reward and know when to get in and when to get out. Trends are short-lived and quick hits are the safest strategy. Stay away from oil and natural gas unless you enjoy playing the lottery. We also highlight our favorite refinery play. And keep and eye on the 10-year treasury bond, as its yield is threatening to takeout important support, indicating a possible flight to safety. -

Posted on August 26, 2008 | 2 CommentsStockTock.com discusses the light volume, choppy action today as the S&P continues to hold its critical support level at 1263. We remain short-term bullish on the S&P but are concerned about a tiring support line and a potential "kiss of death" selloff. Today, the dollar strengthened and natural gas rallied on hurricane concerns. The QQQQ and IWM look interesting here in the short-term after testing support. These are attractive trades because exit points are "clear and near". We analyze the price action in natural gas and how the market bounced exactly when most traders gave up on their long positions. The market has an uncanny ability to reverse at emotional threshold levels. We also look at SPY, XLF, UUP, and USO. -

Posted on August 25, 2008 | 4 CommentsStockTock.com discusses today's light volume selloff in the S&P, which sets up an attractive risk/reward for a long side trade. This is a popular vacation week for traders, so the markets tend to be less liquid and more volatile. The VIX spiked 11% today but remains safely within a descending channel. We look at SPY, XLF, QQQQ, IWM, TNX, UUP, USO, UNG, and FXI.
